Homestay & Host Families
As a leader in international education in South Australia, Marryatville High School regularly hosts students (and teachers) from other countries to learn at our school for a period of time. Many are here to practise their English language and our homes are a great and practical place to do this. Through our Sister School programs, our students also have the opportunity to visit other countries.
Being a homestay family means inviting a student to become a part of your family for the time they are here. For many students and families, this relationship can last well beyond the visit to Australia and, for some, it will lead to life-long friendships. Hosting a student from another country gives your family a wonderful opportunity to share cultures in your own home.

How do we become a host family?

Contact either the international office and or the coordinator, languages and international tours, for information about the various programs that are available.

How old are students and how long do they stay?

Students in school programs generally stay between 1 and 10 weeks and are aged between 14 and 17. Longer stays are possible but they are managed by the international education services.

What about the language barrier?

These students usually come with average to very good English skills. They are here to use their skills in real situations.

What do these students need?

They need a safe and welcoming home. A room of their own would be ideal, but is not essential. Mostly, they need to be made part of your family while they are here

Where do they come from?

Students generally come from Europe, South America and Asia, depending on the type of program. Marryatville has a sister school in Japan which visits every two years.

Will we be paid to host the students?

Some of the visits are organised by agents and there is an arrangement for homestay families to be paid a weekly amount to support the visit.
Other visits are from our sister schools with which we have reciprocal touring arrangements and for which there is no weekly payment.
